Top MBA Destinations - in the world

  • USA
The first level of higher education in USA is called “undergraduate,” and it awards a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree.

Most USA study programs for undergraduates require four years of study, and usually a completed secondary school education is sufficient to enroll as an undergraduate student. First-, second- and third-year students of foreign institutions of higher education can transfer into U.S. undergraduate degree programs.

Any student desiring to study in USA should be aware that Graduate degrees refer to Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MS) or Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD). Students who have already received their first higher education diploma, either a BA or BS in the United States or the equivalent, are eligible to apply to graduate programs. The MA and MS degrees through education in USA are usually awarded after two years of study. The Ph.D. is the highest academic degree amongst the USA study programs. This degree follows an MA or MS and typically requires at least three years of study and a lengthy dissertation.
  • UK
Before applying to UK study programs you may have completed your secondary studies from your country but unfortunately they will not be initially accepted if you want to study in UK. For this you will have to undergo a one year International foundation course to bring your qualifications up to the required mark, acceptable for the course you want to take up to study in UK.

Undergraduate Degrees in UK study programs and their Duration
All undergraduate degree courses in UK study programs last for 3-4 years. This however does not include the Degrees in Medicine, Veterinary Sciences, Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry which are of 5 years duration.

Combined and Joint Honors Degrees
An interesting aspect of education in the UK is that several of them offer two or more subjects for specialization in a Combined and Joint Honors Degree. A Combined Degree in UK study programs is one wherein different subjects are studied but do not necessarily bear equal importance. A Joint Degree in UK study programs however is one wherein two subjects are studied and they bear equal importance. These two subjects may be closely related or distant yet connected in some way.

Sandwich Courses
If you wish to study in UK through Sandwich Courses in UK, you would be involved in both study and work experience. This means that you would be expected to spend a year or two blocks of six months each of your course duration in a working atmosphere related to your course. Following which you would have to return to the University to complete the final year of study. This would extend the duration of the three year course to four years.

Pre-Masters Program
Many UK study programs in different universities provide a one year Pre-Masters program, during which you would study a specialist subject, academic English and study skills that would prepare you for taking up a Masters program eventually.

Postgraduate Degrees
The major Postgraduate Degrees in UK study programs, namely, Masters in Arts, Masters in Science and LLM last for a year whereas Research Degrees in UK, namely, M.Phil and PhD stretch from one to three years. Types of Postgraduate Degrees: Postgraduate Degrees in UK encompass three kinds:

1. Specialist: As the name suggest, if you wish to study in UK, these are advanced degrees wherein you will be able to further enhance your chosen discipline of the Bachelor’s Degree. To be eligible to study under this degree the education system in UK requires you to have completed your Bachelor’s in the same discipline.

2. Conversion: A conversion degree course in the education system in UK caters to those of you who intend to change your choice of subject or stream to pursue postgraduate studies.

3. Research: Again as the name suggests, a research course in UK study programs is the best for you if you intend to take up research in a certain area. Here, you would be able to take up research under the guidance of a course mentor and rather than sitting in a classroom this course entails self-study.
  • Canada
The education system in Canada is divided into three tiers. The level of literacy in Canada is very high. In fact, the illiteracy rate is as low as 4%. Special emphasis has been laid on education by the government of Canada. The education system is divided into Elementary education, Secondary education and Higher education. Elementary education in Canada begins at the age of six years and continues till middle school. It is compulsory for every child to attend school. Secondary education in Canada commences soon after elementary education and continues till the age of 16 yrs. Both Elementary and Secondary level education are compulsory in Canada. A child must attend school between the ages of six years to 16 years.

Higher education in Canada begins after the compulsory secondary education. Students depending on their skill sets and capabilities pursue graduate studies which are both professional and vocational in nature. Biochemistry and computer science have been among the fastest growing disciplines at the bachelor’s level in the last five years, closely followed by nursing, sociology and psychology. Canadian universities have earned an international reputation for excellence. Their faculty has recognized research and teaching strengths in areas such as computer sciences, business (including MBA programs), health sciences, law, ocean studies, natural resources and agriculture.

As a bilingual nation, Canada offers superior English as a Second Language (ESL) and French as a Second Language (FSL) programs for students wishing to learn either or both languages.

Professional Status
Full-time students registered in a degree or diploma-granting course are allowed to work on the campus of the institution at which they are registered without the need for an employment authorization. The Off-Campus Work Permit Program allows foreign students at some publicly-funded post-secondary educational institutions in Canada to work off campus while completing their studies. The post-graduation work program allows some graduating students to gain Canadian work experience in their field of study. Canada offers some lucrative professional opportunities in the fields of information technology, telecommunications, medicine, education and law.
  • Australia
The education system in Australia is distinguished from many other countries by the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). The AQF is unique to the Australia study programs as it is a national system established by the Australian Government that links courses and qualifications. It covers university, vocational and technical education, and school education.

The education system in Australia is divided into a three-tier structure, combining of school education, vocational education & training and higher education together. If one is desirous to study abroad in Australia then it is imperative to know that formal education begins with pre-school and is compulsory until the age of 15-16 yrs. The education system in Australia encourages the student to actively participate in the process of learning. The uniqueness of Australia study programs also lie in the fact that students are encouraged to research and analyze course contents independently or in teams.

Most Australia study programs offered by Universities in Australia provide courses and conduct research in a wide range of professional and academic disciplines. They award associate diplomas, diplomas, bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees, and postgraduate diplomas. Some institutions provide specialist training in health sciences or teacher education. Universities recognize the awards granted of by each other. So, for example, a person awarded a bachelors degree by one institution could be accepted for entry to a masters degree program by another. The qualifications offered by the education system in Australia are recognized globally.

Professional Status
Many international students who have opted to study abroad in Australia and eventually graduated from Australian institutions apply for Independent Skilled Migration. There is a special category for International Students who have undergone any of the Australia study programs.
  • Asia
Asia-Pacific is the latest educational destination on the globe. Some of the best education in Asia is offered in renowned universities and institutes like Indian School of Business (ISB) Hyderabad, China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU), National University of Singapore (NUS), Asian Institute of Management (AIM), Manila, etc. Studying in Asia is the latest trend primarily because of the new emerging economies, making Asia a fascinating place to learn and work. Asia has become the preferred study destination because of the diversity, innovation and tremendous growth in the economy.

Most Asia study programs offer international Bachelor-Master-PhD degrees. After successful completion of the programs students are awarded degrees or diplomas that are officially recognized by the relevant authorities and accepted internationally. In most Asia study programs, Bachelor’s degrees are awarded after the completion of undergraduate studies, which lasts 3 or 4 years. Master’s degrees are offered after completion of graduate studies, which last 1-2 years. PhD studies take normally 4 years to be completed, consisting of independent research and a dissertation.

A growing number of Asia study programs offer international study programs with English as the main language of instruction. If one were to study in Asia, one would find that there is hardly any conceivable subject area, and any common or rare specialization, in which there is not an English-Language-Taught Degree Program available in some college or university of Asia. Any person desirous of education in Asia will now find that most programs in English are common and hugely popular in the areas of business and management, and science and engineering.
  • Europe
The education system in Europe is one of the oldest and most popular. Europe offers international Bachelor-Master-PhD degrees. Those desirous to study in Europe are students awarded degrees or diplomas after successful completion of the programs. These degrees and diplomas are officially recognized by the relevant authorities and accepted internationally. In all the European countries, traditional degrees offered in Europe study programs are being phased out and replaced by a Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD degree structure. All Europe study programs now offer Bachelor’s degrees which are awarded after the completion of undergraduate studies, which last 3 or 4 years. Master’s degrees are offered after completion of graduate studies, which last 1-2 years. If one were to study in Europe and complete his/her PhD, it would normally take 4 years, consisting of conducting independent research and writing a dissertation.

A growing number of European higher education institutions offer international study programs with English as the main language of instruction. In the education system in Europe, there is hardly any conceivable subject area, and any common or rare specialization, in which there is not an English-Language-Taught Degree Program. To study in Europe now has become particularly advantageous, because programs in English are in particular common in the areas of business & management and science & engineering.

Any foreign student, who wants to study in Europe, can also follow study programs in other European languages: German, French, Dutch, Swedish, Finnish, Danish, Norwegian, Greek, Spanish, Italian, or Portuguese, provided that they have sufficient knowledge of that language.

One salient aspect of Europe study programs is the project called Erasmus. Erasmus (“European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students”) is the European Commission’s educational program for Higher Education students, teachers and institutions. This education system in Europe was introduced in 1987 with the aim of increasing student mobility within the European Community, subsequently it was initiated in the European Economic Area countries, and now even in the Candidate Countries of Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey. In 1995 Erasmus became incorporated into the new Socrates programs which covers education in Europe from school to university to lifelong learning. Socrates-Erasmus can involve student mobility, teacher mobility and curriculum development and is based on co-operation agreements between Higher Education Institutions in different participating states.

Professional Status
Some salient features of the degrees obtained from Europe study programs include the status of the European industry, its strength in some sectors and worldwide presence and accreditation of the courses by national authorities and professional bodies.

MBA Specializations

The Graduate Record Examination or GRE is a multiple-choice admission test for applicants to graduate schools. It is mandatory for students seeking Masters Degree or PhD degrees in the US.
General Management Program vs. Special Management Programs

Students have the opportunity to pursue either a general management program or complete a specialization as part of the MBA program. Specializations are a matter of choice, not a prerequisite, and all students receive the same MBA education regardless of whether they complete a specialization. Students should consider their career goals and professional development in settling on a specialization.

As more and more universities offer MBA programmes, it is becoming ever more difficult for candidates to decide on which business school offers the most suitable MBA programme to meet their requirements. Many business schools are digressing from the ‘generalist’ system, which has been the typical MBA model for the last thirty years. Today you can choose from a wide range of MBA specializations, ranging from an MBA in Financial Studies, as well as Insurance and Risk Management Accountancy and Finance, to an MBA in Sports Management, or even an MBA in Technology.

The trend towards one-year niche, or specialist MBAs, designed for particular groups of professional people, appears to be market driven. Some fields may be nearly impossible to enter without specialized training. Research your chosen industry to determine whether a specialty program may be a better alternative for you than a generalist MBA degree.

US schools in particular, reject the specialist MBA model. Their two-year format allows MBA students to be generalists in their first year, whilst specializing in their chosen field in their second year.

Shape your studies to complement all that make you inimitable — education, experience, aptitudes, interests, passions. Famous MBA schools abroad all have their own specialties; for example, Harvard Business School is at the head of the class in commercial management, the University of Chicago Graduate Business School in financial management, and the Kellogg School of Management in marketing.

MBA in Finance
In the US the finance department has become a battleground for business school
supremacy. With the high profile of Wall Street amongst MBA recruiters, finance is one of the most eminent disciplines.

Finance is such an intricate and diverse industry that many schools have large sectors dedicated to the subject. Most of the world’s investment banks are staffed primarily by MBA graduates from schools with a strong background in finance. After several quiet years, demand for MBAs within one of the most popular sectors for business school graduates – investment banking – is back with a vengeance. According to the 2005 Top MBA.com Recruiter and Salary Survey, which canvasses opinions from recruiters in 30 countries around the world, demand is up by 20%, taking it to a level not witnessed since the bursting of the dotcom bubble at the beginning of the millennium.

For the go-getting MBA, whatever his or her gender or racial background, it means that investment banking is rapidly becoming an aspired field. Banks realize that they need to emulate the diversity and experience of their clients and are making great efforts to achieve this through, recruitment, retention and development. Background and potential, however, are just the commencement and it’s consequently no surprise that investment banks are some of the biggest per capita spenders on training and development of all MBA recruiters.

London Business School has long had a dominant finance faculty, which has only been enhanced since it developed the highly successful one year Masters in Finance (MiF) in the mid-1990s. Yet Janet Dobson, Director of the MiF, endorses the view that: “a specialist Masters like the MiF is very different from our generalist two year MBA. It is proposed for finance junkies…76% of our MiF class already have an MBA or management degree.”

MBA in Health (Pharmaceuticals)
Now worth well in excess of $500 billion per annum, the pharmaceuticals industry is a key player in the worldwide economy as more and more MBA s are opting for this trendy field. The industry’s largest market remains North America, which accounts for nearly half of all pharmaceutical sales, with Europe taking second place at around 30% of total worth. However, this may be all set to change over the next decade. While growth in North America hovers at around 8%, both Latin America and Asia are forging ahead with growth figures well into double digits.

Johnson & Johnson is alone expecting to hire as many as 300 full-time and 150 intern MBAs in the 2006-07 season. As is the case in many key industries, MBAs tend to be recruited by the pharmaceutical sector, as much for their potential as for any specific previous experience, although academic training in the sciences or a background in such areas as sales or marketing can sometimes prove to your advantage.

MBA in Consultancy
Most consultancy firms see a top MBA as a fundamental management entry-level qualification. Without an MBA, it is almost impossible to become a senior consultant in a top-consulting firm. The MBA seems to have moved from a ‘nice to have’ to a ‘need to have’ qualification for those set on an international management consultancy career. According to the Survey, top consultancies are predicting average base salaries for new MBA hires of US $94,000, while one North American firm has reported making offers of as much as US $117,500. Average salaries for MBAs graduating from US schools are on the whole only very slightly higher than those from European schools. 2006 is revealing consulting job listings running well ahead of 2005, and has seen increased hiring from all the major strategy consulting firms as well as the systems integrators like Accenture, IBM and Cap Gemini. Accenture customarily hires between 10,000 and 17,000 people, globally, each year.

MBA in Information Technology
Students interested in careers in management consultancy, software or database development, enterprise management systems, telecommunication and business analysis must opt for the specialization and will be recognized as having a thorough IT background. IT graduates play essential roles on the business team, typically designing and implementing hardware and software solutions to business problems. They hold professional positions in areas such as client/server or web applications development, systems analysis and network administration. They constitute the important workforce as technical and management professionals in a variety of industries. Students obtaining such a certificate usually acquire positions in the top management consulting firms or as strategic analysts in the transportation, telecommunications, and financial sector.

Graduates are expected to possess the appropriate knowledge, experience and skills to adapt to change in this dynamic field through a lifelong learning process. They are prepared to help shape twenty-first century organizations in a rapidly changing, globally competitive, technologically sophisticated environment. The program is designed to develop a diverse and integrated group of experts armed with the necessary skills for building new entrepreneurial ventures.

MBA in Telecommunications
Technical convergence changes everything. An MBA in this particular field equips students with a global vision of the business convergence process currently taking place and poised to form one of the major industries of the 21st century. A full time program from Instituto de Empresa Business School organized in collaboration with Accenture, international leading partner, is oriented to innovative professionals of any background who want to plan a career path in the digital economy, either as a key player in a leading multinational or as an entrepreneur.

Telecommunications have made huge leaps forward in the past two decades. It is one of the fastest growing industries in the world. The emphasis is on the value added services, such as e-mail, cellular phones, WAP etc in developed countries and in improving basic telephone availability in the developing countries. This sector plays a key role in encouraging growth in the industrial and services sector.

MBA in Media
This one-of–a kind MBA is geared to professionals already working in media. It was specifically designed to provide graduates with the foundation, skills, and competencies required to both understand and function within the complex legal, ethical, economic, and social dimensions of media management.

Admission to this program requires entering students to have prior media, art or media related business expertise. Students come from a wide array of backgrounds in communication arts; radio; television; film; music; fine arts; gallery and arts administration; museum administration; law; education; business management; marketing; public relations; creative writing; journalism; multimedia; publishing; e-commerce; theatre; dance; and opera.

Each semester combines academic study with actual managerial experience. In the first semester, students focus their efforts on creating a comprehensive business plan for a media-related venture designed to satisfy a need, realize an opportunity, or address a challenge within a given media industry. In the second semester, students implement aspects of their business plans and in the third semester they develop and implement a marketing plan to promote their respective media ventures
Schulich offers Canada’s only MBA with a specialization in arts and media administration. The specialization is suitable for students who have either work experience in the cultural sector or an undergraduate education in areas of the arts such as music, theatre, dance or the visual arts, or areas of the cultural media such as film studies or literary studies. Schulich graduates from the arts and media administration specialization fill such positions as: general manager and marketing and development directors of major performing and visual arts organizations; cultural policy analysts at all levels of government; owners of entrepreneurial endeavors in the cultural sector; and business managers in the film industry.

MBA in Services
The financial services sector is undergoing profound and rapid change. Organizations require professionals who understand the dynamics of the industry, and the broad direction and implications of the forces of change. Such professionals must have a strong foundation in skills that will be relevant to a critically important and fast-changing industry. These skills include areas such as marketing, strategy, real property development and organizational behavior/industrial relations. They also include finance and financial engineering skills, which are particularly relevant to manage risk in the sector. The program is designed to compliment these skills by providing students with an appreciation of how this important industry sector is changing, and the implications of this change for the application of these skills. The program adds value to students who wish to work in the financial services industry.

The program stresses relevance as well as rigor. To this end, it is committed to developing relationships with firms and senior executives in the financial sector that can provide ‘real-world’ perspectives on current issues.

Part-time/Evening Program

  • A part-time MBA program is for professionals who attend classes in the evening after their work hours and wish to enhance their career by an MBA degree.
  • A part-time mba program usually offers specializations same as a full-time mba program but in some cases, the number of concentrations is limited. Some part-time programs are as extensive as the full-time programs but are spread out over a longer time. A part-time program is the most effective and focused program for aspiring and ambitious professionals who wish to combine their work expertise with knowledge of contemporary management theories and practices.
  • This is one of the unique types of MBA degree programs which can be funded with loan money available for eligible students and sometimes the employers also provide tuition reimbursement as an employee benefit. While considering a part-time program, one should keep in mind a few limitations of this program. Since the students are working, scholarship money is not available and even the career services are quite restricted. In this format, most international MBA programs cannot be converted into a full time since the credits do not get transferred
MBA One Year Programs
  • The one-year fulltime MBA program is one of those MBA degree programs which is intensely concentrated and taught over a duration of 11 to 16 months. The program has a high level of competition and provides learning beyond the classroom.
  • Like a regular MBA program, this MBA one year program also offers a complete and intensive learning experience which includes career services like campus interviews, social and professional clubs, career counseling and other services
  • There are no internship opportunities since there is no sufficient time break between semesters.
MBA Executive Programs
  • Executive MBA degree programs (EMBA) are usually company-sponsored programs aimed at furthering the career growth of working executives. These programs groom the professionals in general management skills and aid them in their climb up the corporate ladder.
  • The classes are held over weekends and the academic environment is conducive to interactive learning with students contributing their ideas and insights towards the curriculum
  • EMBA (Executive MBA) Program is one of those types of MBA programs that differ greatly from a full-time MBA program in many aspects. Since the students are already employed, there are no internships and university scholarships available. The curriculum offers only general management skills and there is no or very limited chances of specialization
  • EMBA (Executive MBA ) Program is one of the most popular international MBA programs as it is a beneficial program for executives as it provides a solid foundation in each of the major business disciplines and the students earn their degree in two years or less.
  • Pursuing this program involves a high level of commitment since the student has to balance both the professional and academic front and keep pace with the demanding and hectic schedule.
  • Most EMBA Executive MBA program students have to devote 80 to 100 hours a week between job and studies. Absenteeism is not tolerated since the classroom time is squeezed especially for the convenience of the students
Executive Education
  • Executive Education is one of the different types of MBA program that is broad and an evolving concept, which is being embraced by corporate houses and multinational companies for harnessing the maximum potential of their executives.
  • An emerging trend in Executive Education is the bent towards customized programs, which are tailored for a particular concern or company. These programs allow for practical learning on the job and equip the executives with the necessary skill-set to succeed in a dynamic business environment.
Difference between Executive MBA Programs and Executive Education
  • Executive Education is one of those types of MBA programs which is all-embracing, comprising of the Executive MBA program along with various other training and development programs created for skill building in executives

What MBA Information Should I Know Before Applying to a Program?

Whether youíre just starting out in business, or if youíve been working for years and want to go back to school for some additional training, deciding to take on an MBA program can be a big choice. Thatís why itís important to make sure that you understand what will be required of you, learn more about a variety of programs and work towards making a decision that suits your personal and professional needs.
First and foremost, youíll want to consider the reasons youíre going back to school for an MBA. This can have a big impact on the types of programs that will best prepare you for the business world and according the kind of schools that youíll want to apply to for admittance. Schools online and off generally offer a wide range of specialty MBA programs that can allow you to focus in your studies on areas as diverse as accounting and information technology, though some may offer more generalized programs as well. Figuring out your personal interests is the first step to preparing to apply for an MBA program.
Once youíve established the kind of program youíd like to pursue, start looking for schools in your area that offer that line of study. Of course, you shouldnít settle for a sub par school simply because itís nearby. Do your research into the MBA programs offered by any institution by reading about them online and checking out where they rank nationally in terms of MBA programs. If there isnít a school in your area that suits your personal needs, you may want to consider an online program or a combination in-class and online program that will allow you to get your degree without having to travel to a campus several times a week for class. Additionally, youíll want to learn more about the professors who will be teaching you and the type of environment these schools provide, as these will be key factors in your success and how much you get out of the experience.
During your search for the ideal school, also consider the length of each program and the time it will require from you each week. If you plan on working and getting your MBA simultaneously, some programs may make that easier than others with night classes or online flexibility. Different programs may require a different amount of credit hours as well, something that may save or cost you in terms of time and money, factors youíll need to weigh before making your final decisions.
Finally, youíll want to consider the financial aspects of going back to school as well. Depending on the school you choose, getting your MBA may be a fairly costly endeavor. For some, this may be a great long-term investment in a career but for others it may cause a great deal of financial stress. Start looking for scholarship and grant money as youíre considering applying for schools to see whatís out there and available to you to help ease the financial burden of pursuing your business goals.

What do you do for entrepreneurs?

In our entrepreneurship program, we run a business-plan competition with more than 400 students involved and more than $100,000 in cash and prizes awarded to those students. We have venture capital introductions and a business incubator, and we have an entrepreneur-in-residence program. Students want to learn about theory and new techniques, but they also want examples and applications of what they're learning.

How can MBA programs address differences of opinion about curriculum?

There was an interesting book that came out some time ago called MBA: The First Century. Even from the beginning there have been opposites. Some say the MBA has become too theoretical; some say it's too applied. Some say it's too short-term-oriented; some say too long-term-oriented. Some say MBA grads are too ambitious; some say we need more ambitious MBAs. There's a constant debate about what MBA programs should look like.
The problem is getting the right balance. There are 12,000 business schools in the world, and Wharton and a couple hundred others are in business to create new knowledge and disseminate it. We have to get the right balance between theory and practice. We have 2 million subscribers to our journal Knowledge@Wharton, which is published in multiple languages. The reason I'm mentioning that is we're in the business of creating knowledge, and there's an immediate payoff from what we do. If we don't do research that helps firms in the wider world, then we're out of business. We have to prove that the research we do is valuable to businesses.

How can business schools stay relevant?

Business schools have to prove they are a force for good in the world, and that's even more important with things like Occupy Wall Street and the financial crisis. We create economic welfare by creating knowledge and disseminating it so our graduates can go work in business firms and be more effective and more efficient. We have to be constantly innovative.
Entrepreneurship is becoming more and more important in our economy and the world economy. It's a hot topic in the world, and the whole debate in Europe about austerity vs. growth keeps getting back to entrepreneurship. The U.S. has emphasized entrepreneurship for a longer period of time than Europe. You might argue that Wharton has had strong ties to entrepreneurship since it was founded.

Why should an entrepreneur consider enrolling in business school?

It can be somewhat inefficient if you venture forth on your own and have to learn everything as you go. That's an expensive learning experience. But with an MBA focused on entrepreneurship, you have formal courses that will bring you up to speed in finance, marketing, sources of capital--things you could learn on your own but that might be inefficient to do so. It might be more difficult to raise money without an MBA. It's easier if you have the imprimatur of a school behind you. That has some real symbolic value and a network for you, which might turn out to be very important.
